Two Names

Today I wandered out

And saw something

Different, usually I would overlook

The ground, however,

The ground did not overlook me

As I counted the cracks

In the sidewalk.

It was that hot day in Austin

Where the overlooking took over

Me and I saw for the first time

Etched in the greyish-white cement

Two names between where the sidewalk

Ended and the brick alley began

Like lovers, boldly proclaiming love

In a dead-end street, these two names

Seemed to defy the status quo of the mundane

And the everyday:

Similar to flowers that refuse to

Quit growing where it seems damn near

Impossible to grow

Those two names — don't ever

Expect me to give them up —

Defy the odds of reality

And maybe their love did,

Too.
