“I guess if you want it, you’ll just have to do it” –Ekoh
This is going to be an unconventional post for me. Why? Because it’s going to be about rap music. I know a lot of rap revolves around drugs, alcohol, sex, and money, and a lot of it can be very vulgar. However, there are several rappers that I have discovered that I love listening to. They rap about the music industry, addiction, trauma, their past, and more. They see music as a way to heal. One of my favorite rappers goes by the stage name Ekoh. He’s a native to Las Vegas, and his style falls into the hip-hop rap area. (Don’t ask me what other kinds of rap there are—I don’t know.)
I discovered Ekoh during my 2019-2020 winter break. I forget how—I’m sure it was on either Instagram or Spotify. But I went down the rabbit hole of his discography and immediately started adding his songs to my rap playlist. He’s very active on social media, replying to fans and such. When the music video for his single “Freeverse 5” came out, I tweeted at him, and he not only liked the tweet but replied to it!
I love how hard he works putting out music. The grind does not stop for him. Since he’s an indie rapper, he’s not with a record company and he does everything himself—the writing, recording, mixing, producing. He stocks his merch shop often, and the artwork for his singles and albums is so cool! On top of everything else, Ekoh is actually talented. Like damn, this guy can rap.
As with KALEO, I want to see Ekoh in concert someday. I could’ve gone to a concert back in early August, but I had no one to go with me, and concerts are more fun when you go with someone. Oh well, hopefully next time.
Interested in Ekoh? Here are my top 5 songs!
Westside (the music video is something out of a sad rom-com… I love it)
